Running Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Park

I finally did it! No City official could tell me the distance of the full course around the park. So I took a measuring stick and measured both the trail and "track" at Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Park.

Here are the results:

The Trail (the large one that covers the park)
One Loops = 6888 ft (about 1.3 miles)

The Track (near Hazeltine Parking lot, circle 4 baseball diamonds)
2600 ft (40 ft. shy of 1/2 mile)

What's additionally rad about this?
1 Trail Loop (1.3.) + 1 Trail Loop (1.3) + 1 Track Loop = 5K (3.1 miles)
For a 10K, just double all of it.

This information is very "City Nerd" of you! Just to make it even more clear, this is the "Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks WAR MEMORIAL Park," named in honor of American Veterans in general. In 1947, a group of the American Legion fundraised to buy what is now V.N./S.O. Park and gave it to the City with the agreement that a memorial would be built for all veterans who served the nation. He park itself is a Monument, but no monument is actually located there.

Also, this 68 acre park was going to be themed based on L. Frank Baum's Land of Oz books with chirldren's play areas depicting scenes. The "over the rainbow" bridge was built but not much else as was planned. The bridge and the adjacent play castle were both razed in the 90s. (You can still see the two points where the bridge touched grond as little hills at the corner of Hazeltine and Houston.)

Thank you so much for doing this! I run at the track and I THOUGHT it didn't feel like a standard 400 meter lap...

Out of curiosity, where did you measure on the track? The inside "lane" or the outer "lane"? Then I can properly adjust to make sure I'm getting that full 40 feet in that it is short on...

Thank you so much! I live right on the park and have always been curious.

I'm assuming you included a half-lap around the track in the "trail" calculation? (ie- the "trail" goes all the way to hazeltine around the baseball diamonds?)

does anyone know what time the lights (if at all) come on in the morning around the track?
